No doubt the best mouthwash is the organic one, if you want to make sure your mouthwash is a 100% natural do it yourself, I am sure you already have the ingredients at home, here I am going to give a quick an easy recipe for a homemade mouthwash.

Some commercially available mouthwashes often contain so many harmful chemicals for you health. 

According to Eric Mehler dentistry, scientific studies have found that chemical mouthwashes can lead to higher blood pressure and irritation of the gums and mouth tissues. This is especially a problem for those suffering from mouth ulcers or those who have naturally drier mouths. Moreover, some commercial mouthwashes get their bright neon colors from artificial food dyes. Never ingest them because some of the chemical dyes are possible carcinogenic.

This is the list of chemicals to avoid in a mouthwash according to INH

1- Artificial dyes. They can stain your teeth plus they are linked to tumor development and attention disorders. Commonly used mouthwash dyes like FD&C Green No. 3, D&C Yellow No. 10, and FD&C Blue No. 1 can cause liver damage. Always read the full formula to make sure your mouthwash is safe for you health. 

2- Chlorhexidine. It kills bacteria in your mouth—both good and bad. It is prescribed to treat gingivitis, it can cause tooth discoloration but it has also been linked to increased blood pressure and heart problems.

3- Hexetidine. This antibacterial and antifungal chemical is linked to unstable heartbeat and allergic reactions. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are warned to stay away from it.

4- Methyl salicylate. It is use for flavor but can cause dilation of the capillaries. It is linked to fatal poisonings in children.

5- Methylparaben. This chemical belong to the paraben family and as such is not safe for your health. It is used to extend the shelf lives of mouthwashes like sodium benzoate. Both are endocrine disruptors. They affect estrogen production. A British study has linked methylparaben to breast tumors in women.

6- Triclosan. This antibacterial agent can be found in mouthwash, toothpaste and household cleaning products. High doses may lower thyroid hormone levels. It’s linked to cancer, thyroid disorders, and fertility problems. The FDA has banned it from soaps and children’s toys.

7- Fluoride. It has been linked to arthritis, bone fractures, cancer, diabetes, infertility, and heart, kidney, and thyroid disease.

Quick Apple Cider Vinegar Mouthwash recipe

This is a quick and easy mouthwash recipe. Apple cider vinegar is a excellent natural anti-bacterial.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

Just mix them together and keep them in your bathroom for a week.
